Hernia Surgery
A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body, such as a portion of the bowel, pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. Hernias are common and can develop gradually over time or appear suddenly. Dr Patrick Lau provides assessment and surgical management for a full range of hernia types, using techniques tailored to each patient's individual circumstances.
Types of Hernia treated by Dr Lau
Inguinal hernia
Femoral hernia
Umbilical hernia
Ventral hernia
Incisional hernia
Recurrent hernia
Assessment and Treatment of Hernias
Not all hernias require immediate surgery, and Dr Lau will discuss whether observation or surgical repair is the most appropriate approach for your situation. Where surgery is recommended, options may include open or laparoscopic (keyhole) repair, depending on the type, size and location of the hernia, as well as your general health and any previous surgery.
Recurrent and incisional hernias, which can develop after previous abdominal or hernia surgery, often require more complex planning, and Dr Lau has experience managing these more challenging presentations.
When to Seek Advice
A hernia will not resolve on its own and generally becomes more noticeable over time. You should seek prompt medical attention if a hernia becomes painful, tender, red, or cannot be pushed back in, as this can indicate a strangulated or obstructed hernia requiring urgent treatment.
